1996年，John Galliano接替Gianfranco Ferre成为Dior女装设计总监，同时将Givenchy的设计权交予了Alexander McQueen。在同年为Dior做的第一场发布会中，John Galliano服装发布中大量的舞台装夸张效果便已凸显，夸张怪诞的造型与古典廓型完美融合，这种设计理念在Galliano随后的设计生涯中从未改变过。
在John Galliano 36岁的时候，他完成了在Dior的第一场高级定制发布，一年前，他在Givenchy完成了自己生涯中的第一次高级定制发布。Galliano在这次Dior高级定制中，重新塑造了经典的New Look形象，并且在之后数次以New Look为原型，推出系列产品。

在Galliano塑造的大量民族风格服饰中，东方元素占据了很大的比重。日本艺妓，中国旗袍，折扇，影壁，以及具有东方特色的面料、图案和装饰，都曾反复地运用。当然Galliano每次都不会单独的去使用东方元素，而是让东西方两种元素相互交织渗透，形成视觉上的强烈冲击。 正如Galliano曾对《Daily News Record》所说的那样:“我喜欢那种将两种文化融合穿着时带来的紧张而浪漫的感觉”。
